Essay Contest: Read and Write about the Bay Hampton Bay Days conducts a reading and writing contest called, “Estuary Essays.” An estuary is where rivers meet the sea in shallow, protected bays. Children can check-out books from Hampton Public Libraries or purchase them from Barnes and Noble. An “Estuary Essays” book list has been developed by the Hampton Public Library and includes Awesome Chesapeake: A Kid’s Guide to the Bay by David Owen Bell and the charming “Chadwick the Crab” series by Priscilla Cummings and for older readers, Waterman’s Boy by Susan Sharpe and Beautiful Swimmers by William Warner. ![]() To enter the “Estuary Essays” contest; children have the option of reading one book or several from the list and then writing an essay about what they learned about the Chesapeake Bay. Essays must cite each book read and the age of the writer. All children under eighteen in the Hampton Roads Area are eligible to enter the contest. Winners will receive prizes at a special ceremony during Hampton Bay Days. The “Estuary Essays” book lists are available at the Hampton Public Library and at Barnes and Noble.
